Introductions Hello, to all the baseball coaches, players and parents; but most of all, the fans who make this amazing game possible with your dedicated support and commitment!
My name is Jake H. and I will be joining the Midwest Baseball Magazine blogging staff as the baseball training guru. The blog will discuss a number of topics, such as on-field flexibility training, in-season & out-season workouts, pre-game nutrition and many more areas of interest for the up and coming player. In this initial blog I will introduce myself and my background.
I have been truly blessed to be apart of the baseball experience since my early days as a Little Leaguer. I grew up in northern California in the San Jose area. From the day I was born my life was filled with baseball. Icy cold night games at Candlestick Park (that was before 3Comm, Pac Bell, or AT&T) and tailgate BBQ’s at the Coliseum in Oakland was how my young summers were filled. I was transplanted to Arizona in the summer of 1997 where I quickly realized there was no regular season Major League Baseball. To my excitement, not even a year later the Diamondback’s opened up shop and my world was complete again.
Skip ahead a few years to October/November 2001 when my passion for the game grew uncontrollably. I was one of the lucky few who had tickets to Game 7 of the D-backs – Yankees World Series. Witnessing that game in person was unlike anything I had ever before experienced. During the years surrounding that epic World Series, I had been playing ball in high school and during the winter of my senior year I won a roster spot on an international independent team going to play in Australia.
I went on to play college baseball at two smaller universities and then decided to come back to my home state and begin my coaching career. I began doing personal instruction with Big League Baseball Instruction (BLBI) here in the valley of the sun. Last year I accepted a coaching position at Gateway Community College where I worked with their catchers and hitters. I am still heavily involved with BLBI, where I have recently been placed as head of our baseball physical training and nutrition sector.
I am currently back in school finishing up a degree in Exercise & Wellness-Sports Performance at Arizona State University’s Polytechnic Campus. I will be graduating in May 2008 and plan to continue my work in the game of baseball as a coach and trainer; prospectively looking towards a strength coach position with a major league organization.
If there are any specific training topics that you, as readers, would like me to blog on I would be more than happy to accommodate some of your requests. I will never claim to know everything about training for baseball, but I will stake my credibility on not relaying any false or detrimental information to my readers.
